About Us

Due to the current situation with the Covid-19 Pandemic this group has suspended monthly meetings and regular help desks until 2021 to keep both you and our volunteers safe and well.

You will get updates regularly via our Facebook pages, and of course our Forum is still open and active and you are very welcome to join us there. We're sorry for any inconvenience caused and hope you understand.

The Leigh Group, formed in 1982, is one of the six groups of the Liverpool and South West Lancashire Family History Society. Meetings are held in the Derby Room at Leigh Library throughout the winter months

These are held on the third Tuesday of each month except July, August and December, and start at 7.30 pm, but a Help Desk is available from 7.00 p.m

Our meetings usually have a family history related speaker but members are always able to browse and borrow books from the Group's library.

We have recorded Monumental Inscriptions at the following churches and cemeteries

       Abram St. John's
       Golborne St. Thomas's
       Westleigh St. Paul's
       Lowton St. Mary's
Ashton-in-Makerfield St. Thomas's, Warrington Road and Heath Road
       Leigh Cemetery

All the above are available on CD from the shop. The MIs for most of Leigh Cemetery are now available at Leigh Local Studies Section.

Wigan & Leigh Archives Services is now open at the far end of Leigh Library whilst the refurbishment of Leigh Town Hall takes place. The opening hours are Monday to Wednesday 9.00 a.m. to 12 noon. Thursday & Friday 12 noon to 5.00 p.m.
Closed Saturday and Sunday.

Please be aware that only limited access to documents is available at the moment as much of the stock is in storage during the refurbishment. It is advisable to check by telephone 01942 404430 to see if any specific documents would be available.

Members of the Leigh Group have a Help Desk each Monday (excluding Bank Holidays) from 12 noon to 2.00 p.m. at the Archives & Local Studies area.  There is no need to book. Just bring along any information you have.

Unfortunately we are unable to carry out detailed research.

Leigh Group Projects

The Group have been involved in many projects over the years. The first project was a compilation of the whereabouts for all church records for the whole area covered by Leigh & District and its surrounding areas.

Members have also been involved in indexing the birth, marriage and death indexes of the whole of the Wigan & Leigh Registration District from 1837 – 1950, and these are now available on the Lancashire BMD web site.
